The Royal Grand Palace + Wat Arun (Templa of the Dawn)

The Royal Grand Palace + Wat Arun (Templa of the Dawn)

The Grand Palace  when King Rama I ascended the throne in 1782, he considered the location of King Tak Sin's RoyalPalace on the west side of the Chao Phraya River unsuitable for verious reasons. Therefore he decided to move the capital to the other side of the river. The construction work lasted for three years. The Grand Palace was built then, with a temple or Royal Chapel located within the compound of the palace to house the  "Emerald Buddha"

The Emerald Buddha is the most important representation of the Buddha in Thai Buddhism

Wat Arun - The Temple of Dawn commonly know as Wat Jaeng or the Temple of Dawn, Wat Jaeng once housed two important Buddha images when the Emerald Buddha and the Phra Bang were brought down from Vientiane in 1778. The first wes installed in the Temple of the Emerald Buddha after Bangkok became the new capital but the Phra Bang was later returned to Vientiane.  After Bangkok became both the new capital and the seat of Grand Palace, Wat Jaeng no longer served as the palace temple , so King Rama I allowed it to have monks in residence again.
